Engaging Young People

Young people are at the heart of our work. Here are the projects we are working on:

GLOUCESTER ROUNDHOUSE EXCHANGE:

The City of Gloucester has had a formal partnership with London’s Roundhouse for four
years. The partnership sees the prestigious venue and the City of Gloucester share learning and
ultimately help to deliver Gloucester’s Cultural Strategy. The exchange includes a range of partners including: Gloucester Culture Trust, The Music Works, Strike A Light, Your Next Move and Gloucester Guildhall, all with the ambition to make Gloucester a thriving and welcoming city full of cultural activity, especially for young people (14-30).

Through this partnership Gloucester Culture Trust has helped raise a total of £450,000 in grants from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to support Gloucester’s continued creative development.

The funding will go towards three years of talent development programmes and opportunities to take part in youth theatre, music, beatbox and dance as well as city-wide audience development initiatives. The grant will also enable the Future Producers’ training scheme to run for two more years.

Young Creatives Network

Following a trial Youth Advisory Board in 2019, we have launched the Young Creatives Network. The aim: a space for young artists & creatives to come together, share ideas and create plans to make things happen in Gloucester. As well as collaborating on new projects, the Young Creative Network help us make decisions and support the implementation of our 10-year strategy.

SKELLA

Skella call out graphic for issue 1

One of the projects we’re supporting through the Young Creatives Network is SKELLA – a much needed new magazine for Gloucestershire.

Led by local artist, Tenaya Steed, the magazine invites young people (of those young at heart!) to contribute. The first issue is due this autumn.

Check out the SKELLA Instagram page to find out more, or send an email to skellamag@gmail.com

We’re investing in Strike A LightThe Music Works, Your Next Move and many other local organistations to run creative classes throughout the year and give young people the chance to take part in music, dance, theatre, beatboxing and art from an early age.

We’re helping young people and emerging leaders to develop the professional skills they need to get started in the creative and cultural industries (which are, after all, the fastest growing sector of the UK economy!). There is more information about this on the JOLT and Festivals & Events pages.

Underpinning all this, Gloucester Culture Trust is working with the Roundhouse, the iconic London performance venue and charity, to develop best practice in engaging children and young people and to access further opportunities for national exchange and networks. In 2019, Gloucester was awarded £250,000 to continue this work for another three years.
